DraftKings plans to cease in-person betting operations at Wrigley Field but maintain its entertainment space and sports bar adjacent to the legendary home of the Chicago Cubs.
Two years after opening, DraftKings said Monday the final day to make in-person bets will be May 31.
The venue was a prime location for foot traffic before, during and after games on the north side of Chicago at the corner of Addison Street and Sheffield Avenue.
Since launching the book at Wrigley, DraftKings and other betting operators have faced steep tax increases. Chicago applied a 10.25% sports wagering tax on bets placed within the city and has a per-wager fee or tax.
'While we are proud of what we have built alongside the Chicago Cubs, we are taking a more focused approach to where we invest in the state,' DraftKings said. 'The cost of operating in Illinois, including its high tax structure, makes it more difficult to justify continued investment in a standalone retail sportsbook.'
Fans at Wrigley Field and in the state of Illinois can still make a wager at the ballpark using sportsbook mobile applications.
