WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Trump administration has approved a plan to expand a coal mine in Montana and keep it running for 16 more years, the Interior Department announced this week.
This decision supports President Donald Trump's goal of increasing U.S. fossil fuel production.
The Spring Creek Mine, located in Big Horn County, is run by the Navajo Transitional Energy Company. With the expansion, the mine will produce 39.9 million more tons of coal over the next 16 years.
This is a big win for the mine, which has been trying to increase production for nearly 20 years. A court order that required a new environmental review delayed its expansion. That review was finally completed in January, just before Trump took office.
The NTEC, wholly owned by the Navajo Nation, bought the mine from bankrupt Cloud Peak Energy in 2019.
