ATLANTA, Georgia: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that it is safe for Americans who are fully vaccinated to resume travel in the United States.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said the new guidelines follow a review of studies focused on the "real-world'' effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccinations.
New recommendations include those travelers fully vaccinated do not need to be tested for COVID-19 test before and after trips, unless required by the destination they arrive at.
However, CDC officials stressed that all travelers need to continue wearing face masks, maintain social distancing, as well as take other precautions.
Two weeks after receiving a second vaccination, a person is considered fully vaccinated.
Of note, the new guidelines do not change current regulations regarding international flights for Americans. Those regulations require Americans to produce a negative Covid test prior to traveling, and again be tested three to five days after returning.
In spite of the new guidance, the CDC is still urging caution, Walensky said during a White House briefing. She noted that the "CDC is not recommending travel at this time due to the number of rising cases.''
Current CDC recommendations include being tested for Covid prior to travel and again after returning. Travelers were also urged to quarantine for seven days, or until they had received negative test results.
CDC guidelines are recommendations and do not carry the weight of law.
U.S. passenger travel has steadily increased, and in March one million passengers per day passed through American airports, which were numbers not seen in over one year.
