Illinois officials knew of group home abuses

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show Illinois officials knew about abuse of residents in a network of eastern Illinois group homes two years before a resident died in January following an assault by his caregivers. This weekend, the last residents moved from the homes run by the Graywood Foundation in Charleston. Illinois is acting to revoke Graywood's license to care for the developmentally disabled and has cut off millions to the organization. Graywood is appealing the revocation. A 2009 memo written by an Illinois investigator called conditions at the homes "totally unacceptable." At the time, the homes were under state scrutiny following another resident's death.
