Model of Suns magnetic field created
Researchers at the Universities of Leeds and Chicago have reported that they have uncovered an important mechanism behind the generation of astrophysical magnetic fields such as that of the Sun. Scientists have known since the 18th century that the Sun regularly oscillates between periods of high and low solar activity in an 11-year cycle, but have been unable to fully explain how this cycle is ...

Inconsistent Jones falling behind in the count
CHICAGO -- Through 21 1/3 innings during the 2013 season, hard-throwing reliever Nate Jones has issued 12 walks. But Jones believes control isn't the problem as much as control early in the count. "I get in trouble a little bit by falling behind and I need to go out there and attack right away and get that strike one," Jones said. "I mean it really helps out. You can tell ...

Sale adamant about pitching on Tuesday
Email CHICAGO -- The usually eloquent Chris Sale stammered a bit when asked Friday whether he would fight even harder if his Tuesday start was skipped, much like his start was skipped this past Wednesday, because of a mild case of tendinitis in the back of his pitching shoulder. "Yeah, I want to pitch. I'm gonna pitch on Tuesday. I think that's kind of set in stone," said ...

Email CHICAGO -- Gordon Beckham's Minor League rehab stint will be shut down until Wednesday after he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired left hand, where doctors removed a fractured hamate bone. Glengarry Glen Ross [DVD]
High-pressure salesmen are always walking a thin, dangerous line between their main purpose in life (which is to deceive or, at the very best, to bend the truth to their advantage) and how they must appear (which is honest and genuine) . Whether or not a salesman truly believes he is selling a good product is immaterial. His main function is to tell you what he thinks you want to hear so you will ... ...

Sveum puts impetus on vet Jackson to figure out issues
Email CINCINNATI -- The Phillies' Cole Hamels couldn't have projected a 1-7 record, nor could the Astros' Philip Humber think he'd go 0-8, or the Dodgers' Josh Beckett be 0-5. And Edwin Jackson never imagined he'd go 1-7 with a 6.11 ERA in his first 10 starts with the Cubs. Cubs manager Dale Sveum wants to see Jackson throw with more conviction and be at maximum ...

Following game plan helping Wood improve
Email CINCINNATI -- Travis Wood was among the Cubs players taking early batting practice Friday at Great American Ball Park. The pitcher does like to hit, and he'll get his chance Saturday when he faces his former team, the Reds, for the second time this season. "I think Travis looks forward to hitting anywhere," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of the left-hander, who is 5-for-19 ...

Chicago Chronicle
Chicago Chronicle | Current Chicago News & Illinois State HeadlinesThe Chicago Chronicle was first published as a newspaper on May 28 1895 serving the Chicago and surrounding areas. It was the only morning newspaper at the time and supported the Democratic party, although this changed in subsequent years. The Chicago Chronicle closed after publishing its final issue on May 31 1907, after a history of 12 years almost to the day. This new version of the Chicago Chronicle, which began publishing on September 11 2002 is essentially a local Chicago online newspaper, but with a national and international perspective, designed to provide readers with a one-stop shop for Chicago, national US, regional, and world news coverage, weather and sports information, with live updates on breaking business stories, and what's happening in the financial markets.
The biggest advantage we have is that we are an online newspaper, which means we are constantly refreshing our stories as more and more information comes to hand. Often when a story breaks the initial details are sketchy.
We and our sources around the world work hard to gather more information, verify facts, and provide a perspective of the major stories. Expert opinion often accompanies our articles to better inform readers, and provide a more complete understanding
of the news we deliver.
Financial markets and business reports are regular features as we pin down what's happening, and constantly refresh stock market indice readings, dollar currency rates, and breaking business news reports. Our world sports coverage is a priority, as is our regional news.
We like to think if you're looking for breaking news out of Chicago, Illinois, the United States, or the world, you'll look for it first at the Chicago Chronicle.
